Welcome to our 2022 U-JAM Summer Workshop!

Our “Camp Dream” for 2022 - to enrich and enhance the understanding of jazz and improvised music, to connect the community around music, and to develop as individual musicians.

Camp starts each day at 9:00 a.m. – please be on time and ready to play!  We will start each day gathering in the sanctuary for daily briefings followed by Vocal and instrumental classes warmup, fundamentals, and technique.  At 10:30 we will divide by ability into classes exploring improvising, playing by ear, theory, styles, and more.  At 11:30 we will divide into ensembles and combos,  coached by the faculty.

Lunch at 12:30 is included with your camp fee and generously provided by our hosts at the Victoria Citadel.

We will kick off the afternoon with classes in blues, styles, and modes plus masterclasses presented by special guests and faculty who will be featured in our evening concerts.  This will be followed by organized jam sessions and more combo practice ending at 4:30.   But the day is not quite over….

-foldable music stand

-note taking paper/ pencils

-a handheld recording device (most smart phones are perfect)

-a metronome (Pro Metronome is a great and free app!)

-a tuner

-a tablet or iPad

Be sure to mark your name on all of your belongings

On our website there will a hidden page for campers only! This page will host some lead sheets for our core repertoire (10 tunes) with a page of suggested listening links for classic versions so you can hear what the music sounds like in context.  These links are not the only way to play these tunes but will give you a classic version than many professional musicians know and reference in their playing.

If you want to get the most out of your camp experience it is a good Idea to prepare.  You can do this by checking out the repertoire and recordings posted.  Try to learn the tunes, chord changes and forms to each tunes, (for bonus points see if there are intros or outs you can have in your back pocket!).    Other ways to prepare: Learn all 12 major scales and arpeggios, minor scales and arpeggios.  Familliarize yourself with common jazz  chords and types (Major seventh, Minor Seventh, Dominant seventh),  Practice playing all of these fundamentals and the tunes wit the metronome, then do it with the metronome on beats 2&4.
